PIN UP significa letteralmente: appendere, appuntare.
Una semplice combinazione di parole che rimane facilmente impressa e che di fatto esorta ad appendere come un quadro la provocante immagine di una bella ragazza poco vestita anzi possibilmente nuda.
L’idea di creare dei calendari rappresentanti giovani donne sensuali e discinte inizia a circolare alla fine dell’800 con esempi come le “Gibson Girl” che generano un floridissimo mercato e che da allora ha abbondantemente rifornito armadietti militari, officine e barbieri di tutto il mondo. Se nella prima guerra mondiale le PIN UP indossano ufficialmente la divisa ed ammiccano dai manifesti della “Division of Pictorial Publicity” incitando i giovani americani ad arruolarsi nelle forze armate, nella seconda guerra mondiale arriva la consacrazione definitiva quando dai poster e dai calendari delle retrovie le provocanti ragazze passano direttamente alla prima linea schierando la loro bellezza sui musi delle fortezze volanti americane; nasce così la NOSE ART, una nuova forma d’arte che partendo dalla semplice immagine di una bella ragazza poco vestita ha saputo produrre vere e proprie icone di una epoca come la celebratissima MEMPHIS BELLE.

COME NASCE UNA NOSE ART

Ad eccezione di casi particolari, le immagini sugli aeroplani non venivano realizzate da artisti di professione ma dagli specialisti, meccanici o aviatori che erano dotati di capacità pittoriche. Dopo una fase di ricerca “documentale” su calendari e riviste ed una votazione a maggioranza – il capo equipaggio naturalmente votava almeno due volte – si prendeva come riferimento l’immagine della PIN UP scelta e da lì si procedeva a realizzare sul muso dell’aeroplano la NOSE ART arricchendola con riferimenti più o meno diretti a mogli, fidanzate, città o nemici battezzandola infine con un nome evocativo; è per questo motivo che molte NOSE ART ricordano più o meno esplicitamente delle famose immagini di PIN UP realizzate da artisti e fotografi per le pubblicazioni commerciali dell’epoca.

FATAL STARFIGHTER

Se parliamo di pericolo, con le sue forme e prestazioni estreme lo Starfighter F-104 rappresenta perfettamente la percezione del rischio mortale che spesso accompagna una grande bellezza; se parliamo di bellezza non c’è niente di più pericoloso di una bella donna. Si trattava quindi di riunire queste due immagini attraverso lo stesso processo storico creativo che dall’arte delle PIN UP portò alla realizzazione delle NOSE ART.
Il nome è poi arrivato da solo: FATAL STARFIGHTER.

PIN UP ( The Cheesecake girl )

A simple combination of words easy to remembrer and that in fact urges you to hang as a painting the provocative image of a pretty girl little dressed, possibly naked.
The idea of creating calendars representing young sensual and discinte women begins to circulate at the end of ‘800 with examples such as the “Gibson Girls” that generate a thriving market and since then has abundantly supplied military lockers, workshops and barbers all over the world. If in the First World War the PIN UP officially wear the uniform and wink from the posters of the “Division of Pictorial Publicity” encouraging young Americans to join the armed forces, is in the Second World War that comes the final consecration when the posters and calendars of the provocative girls go forward to the first line by placing their beauty on the nose of the flying fortresses; thus was born the NOSE ART, a new form of art that starting from the simple image of a beautiful little girl dressed has been able to produce real icons of an era, like the celebrated MEMPHIS BELLE.

HOW NOSE ART IS BORN

Except special cases, images on real airplanes were not painted by professional artists but by specialists, mechanics or airmen with artistic skills. After a “documentary” research phase on calendars and magazines and a majority vote – the crew chief of course voted at least twice – took as a reference the image of the chosen PIN UP and from her proceeded to paint on the nose of the airplane the NOSE ART enriching it with references more or less directed to wives, girlfriends, cities or enemies, finally baptized with an evocative name; it is for this reason that many NOSE ART more or less explicitly recall some famous PIN UP images made by real artists and photographers for commercial and  magazines of the time.

If we talk about danger, with its extreme shapes and performance, the Starfighter F-104 perfectly represents the perception of the mortal risk that often accompanies a real beauty; if we talk about beauty there is nothing more dangerous than a beautiful woman indeed. It was therefore a matter of bringing together these two images through the same historical creative process that from the art of PIN UP led to the creation of NOSE ART.
The name then came by itself: FATAL STARFIGHTER!
